This is an overview of the educational standards guiding our curriculum in Hawaiʻi. These standards ensure that our students receive a comprehensive and high-quality education across various subjects. Below is a summary of each subject area.
These standards are designed to provide a balanced and enriching education for our students. For more detailed information on each subject area, please visit the HIDOE Subject Matter Standards page.
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are a set of high-quality academic benchmarks in English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. These standards were developed to ensure that students across the United States receive a consistent and rigorous education that prepares them for college, career, and life in a global society.
In Hawaiʻi, the CCSS guide teaching and learning in ELA and Math from kindergarten through grade 12. They emphasize:
Critical thinking and problem solving
Deep understanding of concepts
Application of knowledge to real-world situations
Clear, consistent expectations across grade levels
The goal is to help students build strong foundational skills that will support lifelong learning and success.
